Natural Remedies for Headaches

Headache is a very common condition experienced by many people around the world. A throbbing or sharp pain generated in your head or face. Sometimes it may be bearable and sometimes not. It makes you feel uncomfortable and may cause disturbance in your daily routine. People suffering from headaches can’t focus on their work and daily activities. A human being can expect different types of headaches, such as hypertension. Hypertension is the most common among all, it may be caused due to tension from any work while another type of headache is migraine. Migraines cause pain at both sides of your head, above the ears. It may be caused when you overthink or due to a heat stroke. Cluster headache is very rare and causes pain in clusters or groups. There are many medicines that can treat your headaches including painkillers. However some natural remedies are also beneficial to get relief from headaches.

Drink Water -

  • Drink Water: To stay hydrated you have to drink plenty of water a day. Dehydration is the main reason that causes headache. While chronic dehydration will lead to migraine and hypertension. If you are suffering from any type of headache try drinking lots of water to overcome dehydration because it will help you get rid of pain within 30 minutes. To prevent headaches you may also use different beverages like juices, milkshakes, smoothies etc. and water rich foods like watermelon, strawberries, peaches etc. Also make sure not to drink too much water otherwise it will cause you diarrhea and overhydration.

Take Some Magnesium -

  • Take Some Magnesium: Magnesium is a very important mineral to prevent headaches and migraines. It relieves you from bad pain as well as it is very beneficial to treat many other problems like lowering your blood pressure or maintaining nerve excitability or controlling your blood sugar level and transmission. The daily requirement of magnesium intake is 600 mg. Magnesium deficiency can lead to headaches and migraines. To overcome this deficiency, take magnesium rich foods in your diet daily. Magnesium rich foods are pumpkin seeds, peanut, spinach, almonds and dry fruits. You can also get some magnesium  by taking magnesium supplements but magnesium supplements can also have some side effects. It may disturb your digestive system and cause digestive disorders like diarrhea in some people. It is easily available at your nearby pharmacy or drug stores. Make sure to consult a doctor that could guide you before taking any magnesium supplements. 

Get Adequate Sleep -

  • Get Adequate Sleep: Sleep is a necessary and a very important factor for a healthy life. Similarly, sleep is also very important to prevent headaches which could really be caused by less or disturbing sleep. Make sure to sleep at least 7 to 9 hours a night to get comfortable and better sleep. If you sleep less than 6 hours it will affect your health and cause headaches. To treat your cluster headache and migraine make sure to sleep more and relax your mind. Proper sleep is a natural remedy for treating headaches.

Avoid Alcohol -

  • Avoid Alcohol: if you’re an alcoholic person you should stop or limit your alcohol consumption to prevent headaches. Avoid drinking alcohol to maintain your mental and physical health. If you don’t quit or stop drinking alcohol, it will cause hypertension and cluster headaches because alcohol is a vasodilator. It dilates your blood vessels and makes your blood circulation more free and smooth. If you take vasodilator medication like blood pressure medicines, it has a side effect of headache. Alcohol also causes dehydration because it is diuretic and excretes all fluid and electrolyte from the body through urine. Dehydration is also a reason for headaches caused by alcohol consumption.

Use Essential Oils -

  • Use Essential Oils: Essential Oils are extracted from plants that contain aromatic compounds that give you beautiful scents. Because of these aromatic scents, essential oil has therapeutic benefits that help treat your headaches easily. Peppermint and lavender oil is very good to reduce your hypertension or headache. Applying Peppermint oil on your head will treat your hypertension while lavender oil is used to treat migraine and its pain. Peppermint and lavender oil is easily available at your nearby grocery store or pharmacy.

Try a B-Complex Vitamin -

  • Try a B-Complex Vitamin: Vitamin B complex is very beneficial for your mental and physical health. It helps to convert food into energy and increase neurotransmitter synthesis. There are many types of vitamin B such as  riboflavin (B2), folate, B12 and pyridoxine (B6) that help prevent headaches and reduce pain. All eight Vitamin B are very beneficial for treating headaches and it’s symptoms. Vitamin B complex is water soluble and easily dissolves in water and excretes out through urine easily. You can take vitamin B complex supplements to treat headaches of all types. Vitamin B complex is also present in many foods. You should take these vitamin B complex rich foods through your diet to prevent headaches. Vitamin B complex rich foods are:
    • Milk.
    • Cheese.
    • Eggs.
    • Liver and kidney.
    • Meat, such as chicken and red meat.
    • Fish, such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon.
    • Shellfish, such as oysters and clams.
    • Dark green vegetables, such as spinach and kale.

Drink Caffeinated Tea or Coffee -

  • Drink Caffeinated Tea or Coffee: Drinking caffeine containing beverages like coffee or tea will relax your mind and boost your mental health to work fast and quick. These drinks also help reduce your pain caused by headaches. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor that constricts your blood vessels and maintains blood circulation that helps to treat headache and it’s symptoms. It also improves your mood and mental activities. If you are taking any painkillers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen then caffeine will help increase its effectiveness and work and also help to treat headaches. However, keep in mind that suddenly stopping coffee or tea consumption may also become a reason for your headache. If you’re suffering from a headache then you should have tea or coffee to get rid of it.

Try a Herbal Remedy -

  • Try a Herbal Remedy: Many herbs are beneficial for treating headaches and its symptoms. Herbs that prevent headaches are feverfew, beetroot and butterbur. These herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce headache frequency. Make sure to take at least 50 to 150 mg per day of feverfew and other herbs. Use a purified form of all herbs otherwise it may lead to liver damage. You can also have supplements of these herbs that are easily available at any herb store or pharmacy. 

Drink ginger tea -

  • Drink ginger tea: Ginger has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that helps to treat headache. 250 mg of ginger powder is enough to reduce pain caused by migraines. Drinking ginger tea will treat nausea, vomiting and other symptoms of headache. You can also take ginger supplements available in the form of capsules to heal your headache and migraines.
