Monocular is a modified type of telescope which is used to magnify distant objects. Which is smaller and lighter as compared to binoculars while having the same magnifying power. Handling a monocular is very important to use it. Hold monocular with proper grip while holding it on your eye. You will see distant objects with the help of a lens placed in monocular. For proper functioning, it’s necessary to keep your monocular clean and safe. Make sure to save your monocular from dirt and water. Put it in a monocular bag after using it.

Looking Through the Monocular:
- Operate from your dominant eye: Normal eyes with good eyesight are necessary to use monocular eyes. If your both eyes are normal then you can put monocular on your both eyes. But, if you have impaired vision then use a monocular on your eye with best vision. Use your dominant eye to see through the monocular. Hold monocular with the hand on the same side of your dominant eye. In other words, hold the monocular with your left hand if you’re seeing from your left eye. There are many tests to determine which eyes are dominant.
- Keep wearing your glasses: If you have any vision defect like myopia or hyperopia and you’re wearing eye glasses for clear vision then wear it before using monocular glasses. Put monocular on your glasses and press lightly. If you wear glasses then use a monocular lens with 13 mm of eye relief. It means you can hold a monocular 13 mm away from your eyes to magnify distant objects. Eye relief is written on the box of monocular or on the manufacturer’s website.
- Keep Holding the monocular up to your dominant eye: Hold the monocular up to your eye while placing the ocular lens (eye piece of monocular) close to the eye. The ocular lens should be very close to your eye without touching it. Close your opposite eye for better focus and results. Steady monocular by resting your fingers on your brow. Put your elbow on your body to keep your arm still. You can also hold your wrist with a monocular hand for steadiness. For more balance, lay down on your chest putting your elbow on the ground providing the best and stable view. Don’t touch the lenses on the scope.
- Adjust the focus: Focusing the lens is important to see a clear image of an object. Different monocles have different ways to focus objects. Focus of some monocular can be done by a single finger while some monocular need both hands to focus on the object. If you see blurred vision then rotate the focus dial on your direction for clear vision.
2. Tracking and Tracing with the your Monocular:
- Face the target: Before using monocular, first locate the target which you want to see. Move your face and toes towards the object. Keep your eye on the target before raising monocular and keep locating it. Finding and tracking the target is easier in binoculars than monocular. You can use other geographical features like trees, buildings, stones etc. Use these landmarks to focus on the right area and locate the target easily. If you lose your target then remove monocular and again locate the target with your naked eye.
- Rotate your head to track your target: If you see a moving target then you will have to follow the target by moving your head instead of your eye or monocular. Turn your head steadily and gently. If your target is moving with long distance then move your head and body slowly. Don’t move your monocular from your eye. Sudden or fast movement will lose your focus on the target.
- Refocus as your targets move: If your target gets closer or farther then keep focusing the lens to see a clear view. Focusing your target with the help of a lens to observe a clear image of the target. If your target is moving then focus your lens by moving your head and body to follow the target. Focus lens by moving the dial back and forth, and tracking it with the monocular. This will help you to learn to focus quickly and fast.
- Stay still: If you’re observing the target then stay still and stand on your place. If your target is moving then turn your head and body only to follow it. Avoid running, jumping, walking or driving while using a monocular because it will hurt you and cause severe injuries. Don’t press monocular against your eyes.
3. Proctecting the Monoculer:
- Use the strap: Many monoculars have a strap on it for support and protection. If your monocular has a strap then you should wrap it on your hand or neck when you’re using it. This will support your monocular and protect it from dropping and breaking. Strap is very important when you’re using a monocular on a boat or around water. Because it may drop into the water and can sink.
- Keep your monocular dry from moisture: You can buy waterproof monoculars from the market but It can be very expensive. If you use a monocular on the boat or around water then you should take care of it and prevent it from water. Water will damage your monocular and it’s lenses. If you don’t have a waterproof monocular then use a plastic bag or freezing bag. Put your monocular into the bag after using it. Bag will block water from entering the monocular. But make sure it is completely packed and close. You can also use a double plastic bag for more protection.
- Use the lens cap: Many monoculars come with the lens cap to protect it from any damage. If you have a lens cap then place it on the lens when you’re not using monocular. This cap protects the lens from any damage like stretches, dust, water, and other debris.
- Clean your monocular: Protect your monocular from dust and water. Keep your monocular clean. If your monocular is dirty then you will observe blurred vision or specks obstructing your view. If you have dirt or dust particles on your lens, use an air blower to blow them off. Cleaning monocular with Toilet paper, tissue, and window cleaners is dangerous because it may cause stretches.
